29.3 Imperatives (Other Forms and Exceptions)
In this module, you will become familiar with a small number of commonly used imperative forms that deviate in their formation from the чита́й and the пиши́ types.

Важли́во!
The verbs like ви́бачити, познайо́митися, бу́ти, and ї́хати take the endings -мо and -те in the plural imperative forms, just like the verbs of the чита́й type. However, their stems are different.
ви́бачити → я ви́бачу = ви́бач+у → ви́бач-
познайо́митися → я познайо́млюся = познайо́мл+ю(+ся) → познайо́м-(+ся)
бу́ти → я бу́ду = бу́д+у → буд-
ї́хати → я ї́ду- = ї́д+у → їд-
As you can see, the stems of these verbs end in a single consonant (with the я form consonant mutations dropped), but the stress in the я form falls on the stem, not the ending. Some of such verbs will not add any other ending to the stem in the ти form of the imperative:
ви́бач! познайо́мся!
Other such verbs will add a soft sign:
будь! їдь!
The endings -мо and -те will be added to these in the plural imperative forms:
ви/Ви form: ви́бачте! познайо́мтеся! (or познайо́мтесь!) бу́дьте! ї́дьте!
ми form: ви́бачмо! познайо́ммося! (rare) бу́дьмо! ї́дьмо!
It might be easier to simply memorize these imperative forms, especially because most of them are frequently used.

Бу́дьмо is the shortest and most popular toast in Ukrainian.
Будь здоро́вий/здоро́ва! or Бу́дьте здоро́ві! is a common way to react to someone sneezing.

Another small group of verbs that deviate from the чита́й and пиши́ patterns of imperative formation consists of verbs with the suffix -ава-, such as встава́ти (to get up) and дава́ти (to give).
The imperatives of these verbs resemble the чита́й type, but they preserve the -ва- in their imperative forms:
встава́ти → я встаю́ → встава́й!
Please note these verbs’ imperative forms:
ти form: встава́й! дава́й!
ви/Ви form: встава́йте! дава́йте!
ми form: встава́ймо! дава́ймо!
Note that the imperative forms дава́й! and дава́йте! also have the idiomatic meaning of “go!” or “do it!”:
Дава́й шви́дко! (Do it fast!/Hurry up!)

Важли́во!
The imperative forms of some verbs are simply exceptions and need to be memorized. Remember the imperative forms of these four common verbs:
пи́ти: пий, пи́йте, пи́ймо
ї́сти: їж, ї́жте, ї́жмо
стоя́ти: стій, сті́йте, сті́ймо
боя́тися: бі́йся, бі́йтеся, бі́ймося
